Prince Edward Island is located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence west of Cape Breton and east of New Brunswick, consisting of an island of the same name. The island was named for Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn and it is the smallest in the nation in both land area and population.
Dominating in seasonal industries of agriculture, tourism, and the fishery, provincial economy is limited in terms of heavy industry and manufacturing. Natural gas exploration, agriculture presence since colonial times with excellent potato production account for one-third of provincial farm income.
